Moon Phase · Day 0–1

New Moon

Beginnings · intention · rest

The Moon sits between Earth and the Sun and its lit side faces away from us. A dark sky, and in many traditions the start of a new cycle.

In the sky

The Moon is roughly in line with the Sun, so we see only its unlit side. It rises and sets with the Sun and is lost in the daytime glare. Solar eclipses can only happen at a New Moon.

The energy of this phase

Moon practices treat the New Moon as a blank page: a time to slow down, get quiet and decide what you want to grow over the coming month. Energy often feels low and inward, which is a feature, not a problem.

Working with it

  • Write three intentions in the present tense, as if they are already true.
  • Choose one small action you can take this week for each.
  • Keep it simple: rest, clean your space, go to bed early.
